NHL, players officially agree to withdraw from Beijing Olympics

After the league and the Winter Games Association were excluded from the games on Tuesday, NHL players will not participate in the Olympic Games in Beijing in February 2022, according to The Athletic and ESPN. No official announcement has yet been made.

The NHL had until the 10th. January to withdraw from the games without facing financial penalties.

Several factors have been involved in this issue. First, players were cautious when they were given to Beijing COVID and then faced quarantine that could take more than a month if officials considered them to be a public health hazard. Key names like Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews - two of the best in this sport who have not yet played at the Olympic Games - were at the forefront of their concerns.

"I'd love to go and compete," said Mr. Matthews. "But there are certainly some things that many of us would like to see worked out.

"It's disturbing if that were the case," McDavid said about the long quarantine that could be extended.

In addition to the risk of missing a long series of games across the country and the paychecks that go with them, the NHL announced on Monday that it will be taking a long break to try to stem its recent outbreak of CVID.

Instead of trying to extend the season to summer and shorten the next season, the most likely scenario would be to use the initial three-week break scheduled for the Olympics to gain ground and play these games.

NHL players have not qualified on the Olympic stage since 2014 in Sochi after the league left the 2018 Pyeongchang Games for various financial and operational reasons. Many current league stars weren't even recruited at that time, or are moving slowly to the NHL roster. The last time we saw a semblance of a better tournament was at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
