AHL player Krystof Hrabik suspended 30 games for racist gesture
On Friday, the American Hockey League suspended San Jose Barracuda for 30 games after making a racist move against Boko Imama of the Tucson Roadrunners in a January 12 game.
A source said that 22-year-old Hrabik imitated the movements of a monkey in a taunt that targeted Imama, who is black. The taunt was spotted by players on the roadrunners' bench, and Hrabik was confronted on the ice by Travis Barron of Tucson while Imama was held by a lineman during a game stop.
AHL learned of the incident on January 13 and launched an investigation in which Hrabik was removed from all team activities.
Hrabik's suspension includes the three games he missed during the investigation.
"The AHL is with Boko Imama," said Scott Howson, president and CEO of AHL, in a statement. "It is unfair for a player to be subjected to comments or gestures based on race; he must be judged only on his ability to play on the ice, as a partner in the locker room and as a member of his community.
As part of his suspension, Hrabik has the opportunity to work with the NHL Players Inclusion Committee to participate in education and training on racism and inclusion.
