Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger officially announces retirement after 18-year career

After 18 seasons as the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger announced his retirement on Thursday morning.

In a video published on his Twitter account, Roethlisberger announced what became apparent in the last weeks of the 2021 season.

"The trip was a pleasant one, inspired by a competitive spirit," Roethlisberger said. "My wardrobe must be clean now, my brackets must be hung and it must remain my wife and children. I am returning from football, a truly grateful man'.

In a statement, the President of Steelers Art Rooney II said: '... we are grateful for the success he has brought to the organization over the last 18 years. Ben is always considered one of the best in team history and his determination, resilience and competitiveness are remembered by everyone in the organisation and by the Steel nation around the world."

Roethlisberger, 39, has two Super Bowl bets, the Rookie of the Year honor and the fifth Passing Order (64.088) in NFL history ended a well-deserved Hall of Fame career.

"Putting on this jersey every Sunday with my brothers will always be one of the greatest joys of my life," said the future president of the Hall of Fame.

He won 165 games and ranked fifth in the all-time career court, throwing 64,088 yards, ranking him right behind Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Payton Manning and Brett Favre. He threw 418 touchdowns, which earned him eighth place in his career. He led the Steelers to three Super Bowls over the years and won two Lombardi trophies in 2006 and 2009.
